I’m Shacquille (Shac) Mohi, the founder of Girls Untaxed.

I’m originally from Rotorua (Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Ngāti Whakaue), but for the past three years I’ve called Ōtautahi, Aotearoa home.

A little bit about me. I love an iced coffee with oat milk, but I’ll never turn down a good spicy marg. I love being out in nature and exploring new places just as much as I love a festival or concert. I’m big on working hard, but equally appreciate a good bed rot. I’m goofy, love having a laugh and can just as easily spend hours having a deep conversation about life, personal development and manifestation.

And somehow, amongst all of that, I ended up in accounting.

I actually stumbled into accounting.

Back in 2015, I landed an office junior position at a small accounting firm in Rotorua, where I learnt the basics of accounting on the job.

A few years later, I landed what was then my dream job as an Intermediate Accounting Assistant at a Big Four accounting firm. From there, I worked my way up, eventually working alongside our university graduates and preparing and filing tax returns for clients.

While I was busy building my career in accounting, something else started happening outside of work.

Friends, family and mutual friends who owned businesses knew I worked in the industry, so they started coming to me with questions.

They would have meetings with their own accountants but walk away still not really understanding what they had been told. They'd show me emails from their accountant, pull out their financial reports or ask me what certain tax terminology actually meant.

Sometimes they didn't feel comfortable asking their accountant more questions. Other times, asking those questions meant another bill.

So they'd come to me instead.

I'd sit down with them and translate everything into everyday language so they could actually understand what their accountant was telling them and what their numbers were saying about their business.

No accountant talk. No making them feel silly for asking. Just an actual explanation of what was happening in their business and why it mattered.

And it kept happening.

That's when I realised there was a gap.

Traditional accounting is great at preparing accounts and filing tax returns, but there isn't always the time or space to actually teach small business owners about the tax and money side of running their business.

So in 2020, I decided to do something about it.

And Girls Untaxed was born.

I started Girls Untaxed (previously Kollective & Co.) as a bookkeeping business that could take some of the tax admin off small business owners plates, but education was always a huge part of what I wanted to do.

I didn't just want to do the work behind the scenes. I wanted business owners to actually understand it.

Not long after starting the business, I left my corporate accounting career to take Girls Untaxed full time. I went on to create courses and resources and started sharing tax education online through Instagram and TikTok helping hundreds of New Zealand small business owners build their confidence around tax, bookkeeping and business money.

And that's still what Girls Untaxed is about today.

I don't just want your books to be tidy. I want you to understand them.

I want you to know what GST means for your business, understand where your money is going, know what you need to put aside for tax and feel comfortable asking questions when something doesn't make sense.

Because you shouldn't have to become an accountant just because you started a business.
